Lottery Show at MD Federation of Art

From February 6th through 17th, 2008, my work was displayed at the Circle Gallery on State Circle in Annapolis. This could effectively be called a "retrospective" because I was able to include all the work I had done since beginning to do "box" assemblage in January 2007.

Vincent's Muse

This is a box finished in January 2008. It is my new favorite. Vincent's Muse is an homage to Vincent Van Gogh, an artist with whom I feel some kinship. He was born 100 years before me minus two days. He struggled for years coming to terms with his artisitic muse. He is a tragic figure who brought an intense beauty into the world. He once referred to himself as a "broken pitcher". You may be able to make a tiny one out on the top shelf of this box.

Five Ladies and A beetle in Winter MFA Show

I am happy to say that another of my boxes has been accepted into a juried show at the Maryland Federation of Art Circle Gallery in Annapolis. Five Ladies and A Beetle is now on display through the end of the month there.

Then, during the first two weeks in February I will have a large number of pieces displayed together in "The Lottery Show" at the Circle Gallery. The opening will be held on Sunday February 10th from 3 to 5 PM.

I am also participating in the Mardi Gras Mask auction to raise funds for the gallery. Here's a photo of the mask I made and donated to the auction.

This box was begun the 1st of November 2007 in honor of my mother, Laura, who passed away on November 1, 2006 at the age of 94. She will always be my best friend.

Stages of conceptualization. Addresses the icon of the shoe in children's allegories ... Dorothy's ruby slippers, Cinderella's glass slipper, Barbie's spike heels... The quest for the "magic slipper" (i.e.: Mr. Right, The perfect wedding, etc.).

This is a "busy" one. Images of The Annunciation (left side) and Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring. Being "overshadowed", veiled, the continuum in colored string. Rosebuds for youth and beauty. Much more if you look carefully....

These boxes are my first attempts at mixed media boxes inspired by the work of Joseph Cornell (1903-1972). I first saw the work of Cornell in Time magazine when I was in my teens. I was attracted to it right away. After many, many years of absorbing experience and collecting things, I am confident enough to begin the work. I am enjoying this immensely!
